Four Meritor Sites Hosting Students for NAM Manufacturing Day

TROY, Mich., Oct. 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- High school and middle school students in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee will learn about high-tech careers in manufacturing when they visit Meritor, Inc. (NYSE: MTOR) plants during Manufacturing Day activities this month.

"We hope to inspire young people to consider opportunities in the strong and growing manufacturing sector," said Wayne Watson, general manager, Operations, Americas. "In the years ahead, manufacturing will require highly skilled employees whose high school curriculum has included science, technology, engineering and math. We'll be looking for people who are capable of problem-solving, critical thinking, communication and teamwork."

Approximately 40 students from Apple Valley Middle School in Hendersonville, North Carolina will tour Meritor's plant in Fletcher today, Friday, Oct. 3, on the third annual Manufacturing Day. Spearheaded by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), Manufacturing Day draws public attention to career opportunities in manufacturing and the nationwide shortage of skilled labor.

Meritor's Laurinburg, North Carolina plant will showcase recent investments in the facility when local community and civic leaders visit on Friday, Oct. 10. The York, South Carolina plant will host approximately 40 students on Thursday, Oct. 23. Juniors and seniors from East High school will tour the Morristown, Tennessee facility on Friday, Oct. 24

At each location, plant management and employees will discuss manufacturing careers and Meritor's role as a leading global supplier of drivetrain, mobility, braking and aftermarket solutions for the commercial vehicle and industrial markets. Meritor builds axles, transfer cases, drivelines and independent suspensions at its North Carolina facilities. In York, South Carolina, Meritor manufactures brake components and assembles brakes for on-highway and military vehicles. The company's Morristown, Tennessee facility makes fully machined and heat-treated, precision-forged differential pinions, side gears and other carrier components.

Manufacturing is an economic driver. According to NAM, more than 12 million Americans work in manufacturing jobs. U.S. manufacturers are responsible for 47 percent of total exports. More than 82 percent of manufacturers report shortages in skilled labor, according to NAM, and most say this shortfall affects their ability to expand.

"It's important that America continues to focus on growing our base of skilled workers and that we inspire the next generation of young workers to think about manufacturing careers if we want to remain globally competitive," Watson said.
